Overview
Stasis is a hardware hackathon by Hack Club open to teenagers worldwide. Design and build original hardware projects, get funding to make them real, and earn bits along the way.
Open Sauce is a creator and maker festival in San Francisco. You can choose whether you're working towards Stasis, our in-person hardware hackathon where you'll build alongside other teenage makers, or Open Sauce — and you can change your preference anytime from your dashboard.
How it works
Every project on Stasis has two stages:
- Design — Create your CAD, write your firmware, and put together a bill of materials. Submit for design review when it's ready.
- Build — Once your design is approved, order your parts and build it. Log your work sessions as you go. Submit for build review when you're finished.
After your build is approved, you earn bits based on your project's tier. Bits are Stasis's currency — 1 bit = $1.
Important: You can spend a maximum of 50% of your earned bits on parts. The other 50% goes directly toward your qualification total. For example, a Tier 3 project earns 200 bits — you can spend up to 100 bits ($100) on parts, and the remaining 100 bits count toward qualification.
What can I build?
Anything where you design custom hardware. Some examples by tier:
- Tier 5 (600 bits, 67+ hrs): VVVF Inverter, Custom CNC Machine, Satellite Ground Station, Delta Robot, Custom 3D Printer, Autonomous Rover, High-Power Rocketry Flight Computer
- Tier 4 (400 bits, 34–66 hrs): Battle Bot, Custom Robot Arm, FPGA Board, Handheld Game Console, Custom Synthesizer, Laser Engraver, Reflow Oven Controller
- Tier 3 (200 bits, 17–33 hrs): Split Keyboard, Devboard, Custom Flight Controller, MIDI Controller, Smart Home Hub, E-Ink Dashboard, Oscilloscope
- Tier 2 (100 bits, 8–16 hrs): Custom Macropad, Wireless Sensor Node, LED Matrix Display, Motorized Camera Slider, Air Quality Monitor, USB Hub
- Tier 1 (50 bits, 5–8 hrs): PCB Business Card, 3D Printed Enclosure, Blinky Board, Custom Keycap, Phone Stand, Fidget Toy
Your project needs to be original — following a tutorial as a starting point is fine, but your submission needs a meaningful twist that's yours. See Project Guidelines for details.
Badges
Each project can earn up to 3 hardware achievement badges based on the techniques you used — I2C, SPI, WiFi, Bluetooth, CAD, Motors, Displays, Machine Learning, and more. Badges appear on your profile and project page.
Qualification
As you complete projects, 50% of your earned bits automatically go toward your qualification total (the bits you couldn't spend on parts). Reach 350 qualification bits and you unlock additional Stasis perks.
How do I get started?
- Sign in to your Stasis account.
- Create a new project from your dashboard.
- Choose a tier that fits your idea, or check out the Starter Projects if you're new to hardware.
- Work on your design, log your sessions, and submit for review.
Not sure what to build? The Starter Projects page has guided builds designed to teach the fundamentals.
